A higher average order value is the cheapest route to more revenue: the customer is already there and buying anyway. The trick is to offer something that really fits instead of annoying them with pop-ups. Five ways work in almost every store, and three of them use native Shopify features at no extra cost.
The five ways
1. Free shipping above a threshold
Set the threshold a bit above your average order, around 20 to 30% higher. A note in the cart like “€12 more for free shipping” gets customers to add something. You can do this directly in Shopify's shipping settings.
2. Matching add-ons
“Goes well with” on the product page, a small accessory in the cart. With Shopify's free Search & Discovery app, you decide per product what gets recommended. Hand-picked beats automatic.
3. Bundles
A set of products that are bought together, with a small price advantage. Starter set, gift set, complete look. Shopify Bundles is free and tracks the inventory of each individual item.
4. Volume discounts
“10% off when you buy 3 or more” works especially well for consumables and gifts. Simple versions work with Shopify discounts, tiered pricing with an app.
5. Small extras at checkout
Gift wrapping, a care kit, a spare part. Small amounts nobody thinks twice about. There are proven apps for this that fit neatly into the cart.
FAQ
Don't upsells annoy customers? Only if they don't fit. A care product for leather shoes is a service. A pop-up with three random products is a nuisance.
Where do I see my average order? In the Shopify reports as average order value. Note it down before you change anything, and compare after four weeks.
Is a bundle discount even worth it? Usually, yes, because shipping and packaging are only paid once. A small advantage of 5 to 10% is often enough.
Do you implement this? Yes. In the audit we check which of the five ways will bring your store the most, and set them up cleanly.
