Shopify handles the technical groundwork for you: sitemap, secure connection, clean URLs. What Shopify can't do is think for you. Titles, descriptions, category copy, image descriptions and a clear structure are up to you. Set up these five things properly once, and you'll be better positioned than most stores in your niche, on Google and in AI search tools like ChatGPT.
What Shopify already does on its own
Some things that need plugins on other systems are built into Shopify:
-
Sitemap. Automatically lives at
/sitemap.xmland updates with every new product. - robots.txt. Sensibly preconfigured and customizable if needed.
- SSL. Every store runs encrypted, at no extra cost.
- Canonical tags. If a product can be reached via several paths, Shopify tells Google which address is the right one.
- Hosting and delivery. Images and files are served from a global network of servers, fast and without your own hosting.
That's the baseline. It won't make you rank yet.
What you need to do yourself
1. Titles and descriptions. Every product, collection and page in Shopify has its own field for the search engine title and description. Don't leave them empty. The title should say what it is, not just what it's called: “Men's linen shirt, white” instead of “Model Sven”.
2. A clear structure. Collections are your category pages, and they often rank better than individual products. Build them around what customers search for: “Linen shirts”, not “Summer Edit 2026”.
3. Copy on collection pages. Two or three paragraphs explaining what customers will find here and what to look out for. Without copy, all Google knows is that there are products here.
4. Your own product descriptions. Manufacturer descriptions appear on a hundred other sites. Google then shows one of them, and rarely yours. Write what makes your product special and answer the questions customers ask.
5. Image descriptions. Every image has an alt text field. Briefly describe what's shown. That helps image search and people using screen readers.
Tech: three places where stores lose out
Speed. Slow stores rank worse and sell worse. The most common culprits are oversized images, too many apps and videos that load right away. Any app you no longer use should be removed completely, including its leftovers in the theme.
Duplicate content. Many themes link to products via the collection, such as /collections/hemden/products/sven. Shopify does set the canonical tag to /products/sven, but it's cleaner if the theme links straight to the short address. The same goes for filter and sort pages.
Structured data. This is invisible information in the code that tells Google: this is a product, it costs this much, it's in stock and has this rating. Good themes include it, but reviews, brand or delivery time are often missing. With complete data, Google can show price and stars directly in the search results.
And AI search?
More and more customers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews instead of googling. These systems read the web differently: they look for clear answers, not keywords.
The good news: the foundation is the same. What additionally helps with AI search:
- Concrete answers. Dimensions, material, delivery time, care. Whatever is in the text can be quoted.
- Questions and answers. An FAQ block on product and collection pages answers exactly what people ask the AI.
- Complete structured data. It makes your products unambiguously readable for machines.
- Mentions outside your store. Reviews, comparisons, forums. AI trusts brands that others write about.
We show how to land in AI answers on purpose in a separate article.

FAQ
Is Shopify good for SEO? Yes. The technical foundation is solid, and the important fields are built in. Whether a store ranks comes down to content and structure, not the system.
Do I need an SEO app? Not for the foundation. Apps help with special tasks like bulk-editing titles or extended structured data. But every app costs speed, so only install what you really use.
How long does it take for SEO to work? You'll often see first movement after a few weeks, noticeable results after three to six months. SEO isn't a switch, it's compound interest.
Why don't my collections rank? Usually there's no copy. A collection with nothing but product tiles gives Google little to go on when classifying the page.
Can you do this for us? Yes. As a one-time setup or ongoing with a monthly report.
