A client wanted their new staff onboarded to Shopify in one long workshop, every area in a single day. Doable, sure. But little would have stuck. We cut the live part down to the daily craft and recorded everything else as short videos people can look up when they need them.
The case
Shopify has lots of areas: products, collections, orders, customers, discounts, theme, apps, settings. After two hours, heads are full. Whatever gets explained after that is gone by the next morning, and the rarely used features are exactly the ones you only need weeks later.
How we onboard instead
| What | How | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily tasks: products, images, copy, orders | Live, with exercises in your own store | This has to stick, and it's best practiced together |
| Rare tasks: discounts, collection rules, settings | Short videos, one topic each | Learn it when you need it, not in advance |
| Questions from day-to-day work | A second short session after a few weeks | Only after your first hands-on experience do you know what you want to ask |
The videos have a second benefit: when someone new starts later, there's no need for another workshop. The reference library is already there.
What you can take away
- Less at once, but done right. What's needed every day gets practiced live. The rest can wait.
- Videos beat manuals. A two-minute video shows a click path better than two pages of text.
- Plan a second round. The best questions come after two weeks of working in the real store.
- Think of the next new colleague. Onboarding you can reuse saves a day every time.
Want your team to manage the store themselves? We train them so it sticks.
