Shopify Flow: OurRecommendation forAutomation

Tagging customers, notifying teams, flagging orders: Shopify Flow replaces many small specialist apps. Our experience with Shopify's free automation tool.

In short

Shopify Flow is our recommendation for automation in your store. The app comes from Shopify, is free and can replace many small specialist apps: tagging customers, notifying teams, flagging orders, warning when stock runs low. The only requirement: someone has to understand and maintain the workflows.

Our verdict: Recommended

Every small app for a single task costs a monthly fee and adds more code to the store. Many of these tasks follow the same pattern: when something happens and a condition is met, something specific should happen. That's exactly what Flow is built for.

Typical workflows in our projects: automatically tagging approved wholesale customers so apps like BOGOS recognize them. Notifying the team by email or Slack when a large order comes in. Sending a warning when stock of an important product runs low.

What Shopify Flow does better

  • Replaces specialist apps. Tags, notifications and internal actions run in one app instead of five.
  • Templates. For many tasks there are ready-made templates you only need to adjust.
  • Connects apps. Many apps bring their own triggers and actions for Flow, plus connections to Slack, Google Sheets and Klaviyo. That way apps work together without anyone transferring data by hand.
  • Free. Flow is part of Shopify and has no fee.

What to watch out for

  • Document your workflows. Flows run in the background. Without clear names and a short description, nobody will know later why a tag gets set or an email gets sent.
  • Test first. A flow with the wrong condition can, at worst, tag all your customers at once. Test new workflows with a test order before switching them on.
  • Don't automate twice. If an app handles the same task, pick one route. Two automations for the same thing lead to errors that are hard to track down.

When you don't need Shopify Flow

If your store has no recurring tasks, you don't need a flow. And when an app delivers a complete process with its own interface, it's sometimes the better choice. One example is back-in-stock notifications: if nobody wants to build and maintain that process in Flow, we use an app like Essent Preorder. How many apps a store really needs is covered in our App Diet.

FAQ

Does Shopify Flow cost anything? No, Flow is free.

Do I need coding skills? No. You build workflows from a trigger, a condition and an action. Logical thinking helps; you only need code for special cases.

What do you automate most often? Customer tags, internal notifications and flags on orders.

Will you build flows for us? Yes, including documentation so your team knows later what's happening in the background. If you first want to know where your store is losing time, our Audit is the fastest route.
