Average position tells you little: where SEO success really shows

Maria Ducos · updated October 2026
In short

After a relaunch, we tracked performance in Search Console over several months. The average position improved only slightly. Impressions, click-through rate and clicks, on the other hand, rose significantly. Anyone looking only at position would have underestimated the success. The lesson: as a store grows, it shows up for more search queries, including ones where it initially ranks further down. That pulls down the average position even as visibility increases.

The case

Average position is the best-known SEO metric and at the same time one of the most misunderstood. It's an average across all search queries where the store appears. When lots of new queries come in, reach grows, but the average barely moves or even drops.

Which metrics we look at together

Metric What it shows What we watch for
Impressions How many searches the store appears in Growth over weeks, not individual days
Average position Where the store ranks on average Only interpret together with impressions
Click-through rate How often an impression turns into a click Shows whether title and description convince
Clicks Real visitors from search The result of the three metrics before it
Revenue from organic search Whether visitors actually buy More clicks doesn't automatically mean more revenue

How we read the trend

  • Rising impressions at the same position: The store is reaching new search queries. Good sign.
  • Rising click-through rate: Titles and descriptions match what people are searching for better.
  • More clicks, but no revenue: Visitors arrive but don't find what they expect. Then the landing page is the issue, not SEO.

What to take away

  • Never judge SEO by a single metric. Only the combination shows what's happening.
  • Impressions are the earliest growth indicator. They rise before clicks catch up.
  • Click-through rate reveals the quality of your titles. This is often a quick fix.
  • Clicks aren't the goal, revenue is. Look at what visitors do in the store.
