More revenue from your Shopify store: ten levers that actually work

Pascal Hippmann · updated October 2026
In short

More revenue doesn't automatically mean more ads. The faster money is usually sitting in the store itself: more visitors buy, every purchase gets a little bigger, and customers come back. The ten levers in this article cost no extra ad budget. Pull three of them and you'll see it in your bank account.

The revenue formula

Every bit of online revenue breaks down into four parts:

Visitors × conversion rate × average order value × repeat purchases

Most merchants only work on the first part and buy more visitors through ads. That gets more expensive every year. The other three parts don't cost a cent in advertising.

A quick example: 10,000 visitors a month, 2% buy, spending €60 on average. That's €12,000 in revenue. If conversion rises to 2.2% and the average order to €66, you're at €14,520. Two small steps of ten percent each, 21% more revenue, same number of visitors.

Levers 1–4: More visitors buy

1. Speed. Every second of load time costs sales, especially on mobile. Shrink images, remove unused apps, load videos only when they're needed.

2. The product page answers every question. Size, material, delivery time, returns. Anything the customer has to hunt for is a reason to leave. Delivery time and shipping costs belong right next to the buy button.

3. Make trust visible. Real reviews with photos, familiar payment methods, a clear way to get in touch. For an unknown brand, this matters more than price.

4. A checkout without hurdles. Turn on Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay and Klarna. No forced customer accounts. Every extra field costs sales.

Levers 5–7: Every purchase gets bigger

5. Free shipping above a threshold. Set the threshold a bit above your average order. If that's €60, go for €75. A note in the cart saying “€12 more for free shipping” does the rest.

6. Matching add-ons. “Frequently bought together” on the product page, a small accessory in the cart. Shopify already suggests related products on its own, and it gets better with your own picks.

7. Bundles and volume discounts. Three for the price of two and a half, a starter set instead of single items. Works especially well for consumables.

Levers 8–10: Customers come back

8. Win back cart abandoners. An automatic email when someone leaves the checkout. Shopify has it built in. It just needs to be switched on and well written.

9. Post-purchase email flows. Thank-you email, usage tips, review request, reorder reminder. Set it up once and it runs every day without you.

10. A reason to come back. New products first for existing customers, a loyalty program, a subscription for consumables. A returning customer costs no more ad spend.

Email is the lever most stores underestimate the most. More on that in our article on email flows.

Where to start

Not with all ten at once. First check your Shopify reports and find the weakest spot:

  • Lots of visitors, few purchases? Levers 1 to 4.
  • Lots of small orders? Levers 5 to 7.
  • Hardly any regulars? Levers 8 to 10.

The fastest results usually come from three things you can do in a day: switch on the abandoned cart email, adjust the free shipping threshold, put the delivery time on the product page. Then measure, then take the next step.

FAQ

What's a good conversion rate? That depends heavily on industry, price and traffic source. Much more important than comparing yourself with others is comparing yourself with yourself: is it rising month over month?

Do I need lots of apps for this? No. Shopify already does a lot on its own. Every app costs speed and money, so only install what really moves a lever.

How fast will I see results? Email flows and the shipping threshold work from day one. Give product page changes a few weeks before you judge them.

So more advertising isn't worth it anymore? It is, but only once the store sells well. Otherwise you're paying for expensive visitors who don't buy.

Can you help with this? Yes. We start with an audit, find the biggest brakes and implement the levers that pay off for your store.
