One-of-a-kind pieces need their own template, not a second store

Maria Ducos · updated October 2026
In short

A fashion brand had one-of-a-kind pieces alongside its collection: items that exist only once. Treating them like regular production items wouldn't have fit. They needed a different presentation and a different path to purchase, with inquiry and pickup. The solution wasn't a second store or complex automation, but a dedicated template and a dedicated collection.

The case

A one-of-a-kind piece has no size selection, no color variants and no restocks. People who see it often want to ask first: how does it fit, can I try it on? A regular product page with variants and a buy button feels wrong for that.

The solution

  1. A dedicated product template for one-of-a-kind pieces. More room for images and the item's story, no variant selection, a clear note that this piece exists only once.
  2. A different path to purchase. Instead of just “Add to cart,” the option to inquire or pick up the item.
  3. A dedicated collection. One-of-a-kind pieces are easy to find in one place and don't mix with the regular collection.
  4. The team assigns them themselves. New one-of-a-kind pieces simply get the right template and collection in the admin.

We deliberately did not build automated logic at the variant level. It would have brought more maintenance than benefit.

Your takeaways

  • Special products rarely need a second store. But they often need their own template.
  • Not every product wants to be bought right away. For one-of-a-kind pieces, made-to-measure items or high-priced products, an inquiry is sometimes the better first step.
  • The simplest solution that works wins. Template plus collection is more robust than automation you have to maintain.
  • Let your team do the assigning. A solution that works without a developer actually gets used.
