In short
“We have 300 products, what does the migration cost?” The honest answer: the 300 barely matter. We've seen 30 products take more work than 3,000, and vice versa. The effort is driven by data quality, variants, images and extra fields. That's why we want to see the data before we name a price.
What really drives the effort
| Factor | Low effort | High effort |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | Clean export as a spreadsheet | Data in Word, PDFs, emails or only visible in the old store |
| Variants | Few, consistently named | Many combinations, inconsistent names |
| SKUs | Every variant unique | Missing, duplicated, changing |
| Images | Named and assigned to variants | A mess, with no assignment |
| Extra info | Fields clearly separated | Everything in the description |
| SEO | Titles and descriptions exist | Need to be written from scratch |
| Categories | Clear assignment | Need to be rebuilt |
And there's a trap: “The product is already set up” doesn't mean “the product is finished.” Images, extra info or clean variants are often missing, and nobody notices until the import.
How we calculate
- With unclear data: look at the export first, then name a price. Automated import and manual cleanup are listed separately.
- With small, clear catalogs: fixed product packages, for example for a set number of products with images and copy.
- With large catalogs: clarify the data model and mapping first, then migrate. Not every piece of legacy baggage has to come along.

Your takeaways
- Send your data with your inquiry. An export from your old store says more than any product count and saves a round of back-and-forth.
- Make sure data cleanup is in the offer. Otherwise it quietly eats into the project, and in the end there's no time left for design or testing.
- Clean up before you migrate. Discontinued products, duplicate items, old test data: what doesn't come along doesn't cost anything.
- Good data pays off twice. Clean extra fields improve filters, SEO and AI search, not just the import.
