In a wholesale store, trade customers shouldn’t simply create a customer account. They should be able to upload proof that they really are resellers right when they sign up. Our proposal was a lean registration form with a file upload before approval. The heart of it isn’t the form, but the review process behind it: who looks at the proof, and what happens after approval?
The starting point
Many B2B stores start with a simple account sign-up. The result: anyone can register, and the team then has to request documents by email, ask follow-up questions and activate accounts one by one. The store collects addresses, but it doesn’t qualify anyone.
What good B2B registration does
- It only asks for what approval needs. Company name, contact person, delivery address and the proof. Every extra required field costs sign-ups.
- It collects documents up front. A business registration or reseller certificate isn’t an extra in wholesale, it’s a requirement. An upload in the form saves the email back-and-forth.
- It leads to a clear approval. After the review, the account is activated and gets the right prices and payment terms.
- It uses what’s already there. Depending on your Shopify plan, wholesale prices and approvals can be handled natively or with a proven B2B app. The form just sits in front and collects what’s missing for the review.
Your takeaways
- A customer account isn’t trade customer vetting. If you only sell to resellers, your sign-up has to be able to check that.
- Work backwards from the approval process. Who reviews, how fast, and what does the trade customer get afterwards? Only then is it clear which fields the form needs.
- Fewer fields, better data. Only ask for what you actually check.
- Native features first. A form in front is often enough. A complex custom build is rarely necessary.
